"Last semester, I was blessed enough to be able to study abroad at the University of Stellenbosch, in Stellenbosch, South Africa. It was a semester of learning - both in the classroom and in the community. I learned much about myself and what I want to do with my life, about the importance of learning about and accepting new and different cultures and peoples, and about the importance of keeping an open mind to new experiences and ideas. In addition to taking a full course load, I completed over 120 hours of community service while I was in Africa helping at-risk, impoverished, and HIV-affected youth, both by teaching and mentoring."

"I am a junior this year, majoring in business finance as well as pursuing a minor in leadership. Additionally, I am involved in the Army ROTC program on campus and I am on track to commission upon graduation May 2010. Along with ROTC, I am in the Virginia National Guard and was able to go to Army Airborne School this summer. It involved three weeks of training, with the last week requiring five jumps from 12,000 feet. It was an eye-opening experience that I will remember forever, as well as valuable experience that may be required in order to serve my country in time of need."

“I have learned the greatest gift you can receive is the love and support of others. This has only been solidified by the constant support of my family and friends, and the much appreciated support of those willing to lend a helping hand to others in need. I am so very grateful to have received the Lettie Pate Whitehead Annual Scholarship, and I accept it on behalf of myself and all those who helped me become the person I am - a young woman fortunate enough to continue her education at an excellent University."
