    Coach's Note

CNU Sailing is back on the water, and this team is ready! The last six months brought a great deal of uncertainty to our program, and this fall the Captains return as a varsity team with 14 rostered student athletes, a home at Youth Sailing Virginia on Fort Monroe, and a search underway for a new head coach and assistant coach. Youth Sailing Virginia has welcomed our return to their facility, and the excitement surrounding this group right now is electric.

The season kicks off September 12 and 13 with a double regatta weekend. Our women’s team travels to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, while our open team races just down the road at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. From there the Captains take on a full MAISA schedule that stays relatively close to home this semester, with racing at William and Mary in Williamsburg, at the University of Virginia on Lake Anna, at St. Mary’s College in St. Mary’s City, Maryland, and two more returns to Annapolis. The team travels farther afield twice, to Charleston, South Carolina and north to New England for the Atlantic Coast Championship. Our home regatta is October 10 and 11 at Youth Sailing Virginia on Fort Monroe, and there is no better place to see this team than on their own water. Come out and cheer on the Captains.

This is a team with tremendous potential and every reason to believe in what they can accomplish. Our returning sailors are setting the standard for a class of newcomers who chose Christopher Newport at a moment when they had many options. Their commitment speaks volumes about who they are and what this program represents. By May, this team intends to have earned its place among the best in the conference.

Your generous contributions directly impact our team’s success and future endeavors. Gifts to CNU Sailing this year support three priorities. They help offset the cost of our training and racing facility at Youth Sailing Virginia. They help cover team travel to top competition, from Annapolis, Norfolk, Williamsburg and Lake Anna to Charleston and New England. And they outfit our student athletes with CNU team gear and essential safety equipment, including a full team set of drysuits so our sailors can train and race safely through the cold months on the Chesapeake. Gifts go directly to the needs of the team and help offset the overall cost of the program.

Every gift makes an impact on the student athlete experience here at Christopher Newport. Because of your support, this team gets to represent CNU with pride against the best competition on the East Coast. Join our Community of Champions and support CNU Sailing!
